El PubCap uses shapes hand cut from electroluminescent panels for the animated backlighting on this 14″ vintage crown cap reproduction merchandising sign. At the time, I was exploring vintage beer graphics, so it was natural to attempt an homage to the animated signs from that era.
To begin, I designed the graphic and had it flat printed on a translucent acrylic panel using a large flatbed UV inkjet printer. I then thermal formed it using a foam mold made from an existing metal sign I had. The plastic was backlit using four hand cut EL shapes powered with an Arduino and an EL shield.
This sign could now be powered by the SignBoard using only four of the eight available channels. And the Bluetooth beacon capability of the SignBoard adds additional value. With proximity marketing, it interacts with a brand’s customer loyalty program smartphone app. The package offers brand enhancement with customer connectivity.
